The internet has been inundated with stories, videos, and information about WhatsApp’s plans to share personal information with its parent company, Facebook. Within hours of hearing the news, tech-savvy users began looking for free cross-platform instant messaging options.
If a service could take the place of WhatsApp, it should be free, ad-free, cross-platform compatible, and simple to use. Telegram and Signal were two of the most popular services at the time.
So, it’s been a few months since that incident, and it seems that people have moved on with their lives, despite the fact that they continue to use WhatsApp. So, what went wrong? Are Signal and Telegram inferior to WhatsApp?
Telegram Is Far Superior To WhatsApp When compared to WhatsApp, Telegram is a much better platform. Multi-device login, file sharing, and many groups and forums are just a few of the features. To be honest, it’s like a separate social media platform. However, in my experience, the platform lacks quality, which is largely due to the image it has developed over time. When compared to Signal, I can see that Telegram is used by a large number of my contacts. However, I continue to believe that the platform is unsuitable for regular use because there are still groups whose sole purpose is to spread pirated content, which I cannot combine with my personal messages.
When it comes to user privacy and security, Signal is unquestionably a far superior platform. However, in the last few months, I’ve only received two or three messages, and that was during the height of the anti-WhatsApp campaign when people were looking for alternatives. As a result, I don’t see why Signal should be used as a backup.
WhatsApp Benefits From Its Monopoly WhatsApp has a monopoly, just like all Facebook products, since it was one of the first platforms to offer free cross-platform texting. It also included a number of new features, such as free voice and video calling, multimedia sharing, and an ad-free user experience. Even today, international voice and video calls are prohibitively expensive, so WhatsApp is a godsend. I wouldn’t say it’s the only platform with these features, but it is the only app that the majority of people use, making it extremely convenient.
Because of the nature of WhatsApp, users are hesitant to switch to other platforms because there will still be a learning curve. WhatsApp’s status windows, which have an Instagram-like feel to them, are another popular feature.
Even though there are many convincing WhatsApp alternatives, people aren’t ready to switch entirely because WhatsApp will always hold a special place in their hearts, as the platform that started it all, when everyone used to send SMSs, which used to cost a fortune.
Before writing this article, I polled about ten people (a small sample size), and not one of them has switched to WhatsApp alternatives. I’ll keep using WhatsApp, and I’ve also installed Signal and Telegram, so I’m prepared in any case. WhatsApp, in my opinion, will continue to have a monopoly for many years to come.
